Many think that anxiety attacks have to be this horrifying thing that hurts you and controls your life. While there is that aspect of anxiety attacks, there are ways to cope. You can prevent anxiety attacks! Here are some ideas on how to do that.
How to Prevent Anxiety Attacks
There are a few things that can help you prevent anxiety attacks. What causes them are either some illness, painful memories or experiences.
According to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health:

By the time Canadians reach 40 years of age, 1 in 2 have—or have had—a mental illness.1
Exercise. Exercise is one of the best things to prevent panic attack. You might want to know how that helps — increasing the heart rate can actually reduce stress.
Relaxation. But, there are other things that help as well, like relaxing. The more relaxed you are, the less stress you will feel. The less stress you feel, the less anxiety you have. Some techniques that can be used to help you relax include meditation and yoga, which focus on lowering your heart rate.

Drugs & Alcohol. We’ve all heard from teachers and our parents to stay away from drugs and to not drink alcohol. While you might brush that off because it was another grownup telling you what to do, there is some truth to that. If you are prone to panic attacks, then drinking and drugs won’t do you any good at all. They’ve actually been known to increase the symptoms of anxiety attacks.
Diet. You might even find that there are things you eat or drink that affect when you have anxiety attacks! Sugars are one thing that can really mess with them as the caffeine in the sugar can set you into that mode. So, to prevent these anxiety attacks, you might need to cut out something that might trigger an adverse reaction.
Take a break. Taking breaks can also help. Sometimes we find that we are prone to these anxiety attacks when we have been too stressed. Read a good book. Go to a movie. Even taking a nice relaxing hot bath can help you when it really comes down to it. This will help ease all the things that you are feeling.
Sometimes, people don’t know what triggers these anxiety attacks. They find it hard to determine the cause to stop this from happening again. When this happens, it’s best to be prepared and keep a journal on what you were doing just before you felt the panic attack. Also, write down what you felt, so you’ll have an idea about what might have happened. When you do this, you can find ways to prevent them.
Whether you know what triggers these sudden panic anxiety attacks, or not, you can be sure that in time, you can learn to prevent them. They are hard to deal with and not pleasant to have, that’s for sure.
