Oldest Books in the World at Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

National Library of Israel Collection

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts usually has art exhibits, but for the first time ever, Montrealers will have a chance to see the oldest books in the world. The exhibition is called Resplendent Illuminations.

These books date all the way back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance!

There are 59 books in the exhibition that are intact and date back as early as 1225.

The headlining exhibit at the Montreal musuem is the Books of Hours – extremely popular prayer books of the time used to help teach all about Christianity. They feature paintings of the Virgin Mary and Christ, as well as many saints.

The Books of Hours at that time were often the only books so they were also used to teach people to read.

These collections have been saved and preserved here in Quebec for more than two centuries.
