Due to global warning, and contrary to what climate change deniers say and think, Montrealers who loved skating on Beaver Lake will no longer be able to do so. Ice skating on Mont-Royal has been a staple since the 1930s and sadly comes to an end in 2018.
According to a City of Montreal spokesperson, the drastic temperature fluctuations make skating on the natural rink a danger. Although the city tried to create a harder surface, their attempts failed.
In fact, the machine used in maintaining Beaver Lake’s ice actually broke right through the ice.
However, skaters can still get some fresh air and exercise on the refrigerated rink, although it’s much smaller.
